George served as a quarter master in World War I with the US Navy. Watkins was 29 years old when he broke into the big leagues of baseball on April 15, 1930, with the St. Louis Cardinals. Over the next seven years, George played major league baseball for various teams such as the Giants (1934), the Phillies (1935-36) and finally the Brooklyn Dodgers (1936). George later died June 1, 1970 in Houston, Harris County, Texas and is buried at Broyles Chapel Cemetery in Palestine, Anderson County, Texas. George Watkins owns the record for the highest batting average in their rookie season, batting .373 in his rookie year of 1930, with the St. Louis Cardinals. He went on to play until the 1936 season with the New York Giants (1934), the Philadelphia Phillies (1935-1936), and Brooklyn Dodgers (1936), never again posting a batting average over .312. On June 24, 1931, Watkins hit three home runs in one game.
