Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Carter Family Cemetery [Seems to be the Caney / Burleson / Israel community cemetery] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status: Inactive (since 1935) Contributed by: Jerry Christian. Later notes by Eric Wood. The following information is taken for the most part from "Resting Places" a compilation work of Tracie Harris Ezell, a seventh generation descendant of Hopson Burleson. Tracie has agreed to let us transcribe and put the information on the Freestone County website. The work was supported by the Woodland Cemetery Association and finished in 1998. Located about 200 yards south of FM 27 about six miles west of Fairfield. A small sign on a galvanized metal gate in the fence marks the entrance. The gate is across the road from the Kirvin Water Supply tank. It is difficult to see the cemetery from the road. Some of the taller white marble tombstones may be visible at times during the year. The cemetery was provided for in the will of Oliver Carter, "... one acre situated west of my garden which is now used as a family burial ground which I reserve and wish to be held sacred for that purpose." The 1860 census lists Oliver Carter as owningthe most valuable farm in Freestone County. He was referred to as "The Barron of Freestone County" or "Colonel Carter". Care for the cemetery has been assumed by the Woodland Cemetery Association. The cemetery is no longer used, the last grave being dated 1935. The cemetery is fenced to keep cattle out of it. Names of some of the families that used the cemetery between 1852 and 1935 include Burleson, Carter, Chancellor, Henderson, Kirven, Levingston, Marberry, Sessions, Womack, and Yarbro. Oldest Marked Grave: 1852 NOTE - Suffered from stolen grave markers in the 1920s and 1930s. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last Name First Name Middle Maiden Birth Death Burleson C[olumbus] R[andolph] 01/01/1845 09/29/1885 h/o Harriett; CSA;*O* Burleson David P[ope] 11/20/1848 01/04/1862 Burleson Etta C. 04/09/1845 12/23/1895 w/o G.N.
