Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries [Note: There is also Fairfield and Fairfield Baptist cemeteries in Fairfield.] Fairfield Methodist Cemetery by Carol McGee Anthony, Rufus McGee, and Eric Bonner Wood ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ************** INCOMPLETE - STILL WORKING ON **************** Last Modified: 29 Dec 2006 Status: Active Location: Inside city limits of Fairfield. 1/2 mile E-SE of the Freestone County courthouse in Fairfield. Directions: To reach the Fairfield Methodist Cemetery (predominantly African- American), one takes Reunion Street eastward to the Fairfield Cemetery (white) with a sign at the gate. To reach the Methodist Cemetery, one drives through this gate and proceeds along an asphalt topped path. The path proceeds eastward and then southward. If one stops 50 or 100 yards after the path turns south and looks to the east, the Methodist Cemetery will be visible. Or if one drives off the path before it turns south and follows the unsurfaced path around a big oak tree, it will lead directly into the Methodist Cemetery. On close observation it will be clear that while the two cemeteries are in the same general area, they have been separated from the beginning and until recent years were separated by a fence. Despite the fact that the two cemeteries are so close, these places are separate cemeteries because they have the different funding sources and maintenance. There are graves amongst the trees and along the stream. Do not look only in the manicured lawn areas. Associated Churches: This may seem odd since this is named a Methodist cemetery, but some of the recent burial services are held at either Fairfield Missionary Baptist Church on Huckaby Street in Fairfield or New Zion Baptist Church located near the Post Oak community south of Fairfield. There is a Jones Chapel United Methodist Church in Fairfield. Background: Unknown.
