Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Greenbriar Cemetery / Winkler Colored Cemetery / Mount Liviston/Liventon Cemetery ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGS Map: Winkler Quadrangle GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 31.90750, Longitude: -96.20440 Location: Near Navarro County Line. Three miles south of Winkler Masionic Lodge on private property. Background: Large number of both marked and unmarked graves in cemetery. This was the site of a sizable black settlement during the 1900-1930 time period. This cemetery is sometimes called the Winkler Colored Cemetery. Many of the locals are believed to have been born in the small community of Bluittville between Mexia and Corsciana. The cemetery itself is almost on the county line with Navarro. Bluittville most famous person was Benjamin Rufus Bluitt, the first African-American surgeon in Texas. He was the son of Jarriet and Mariah (Bonner) Bluitt. There was an old Greenbriar Church that existed up to the early 1980s. Also there was a Thomas Chapel A.M.E. Church in Winkler (later Mount Lebanon Methodist). Status: Unknown Directions: From Streetman, go east on Farm-to-Market Road 416 along the southern side of Lake Corsicana. Take a right on County Road 185 going south. This turn onto County Road 185 takes place, just before reaching Winkler at the Winkler Masionic Lodge. At sharp bend where it turns east, stop at the bend. One has to travel across private lands to the cemetery located south. The Greenbriar Church appears on U.S. Geological Survey - Winkler Quadrangle map dated 1982. Past the Lee Cemetery down the road more. Then off into private road to Greenbriar Cemetery on eastern edge of Greenbriar Creek.
