Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Hendrix Cemetery a.k.a. Winters Cemetery a.k.a. Cottonwood Terrace Cemetery ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contributed by: Michael Edd Bonner. Status: Inactive (since 1892), but recently Lynnie Wayne Long was buried there in 2013. Background: An obituary in a 1892 Fairfield Recorder issue, describes "graveyard on the old Champion Echols place, three miles north of town... " as "one of the oldest family grave yards in the [Freestone] County." Hendrix Cemetery is on the old Dr. Pleasant Winter's place (1812-1879) (and thus was called Winters Cemetery). This is the family cemetery of James Albert Hendrix. Also the Rev. Champness Terry Echols (1805-1878) owned the property at one time. John Watson (1798-1859, who was married to Martha Echols who was the aunt to James Hendrix's wife) was buried here. The cemetery is on private property whose current land owner is Columbus Wayne Long. The only modern burial is Columbus's son, Lynnie Wayne Long. There is no known family connection of the Long family with the original Hendrix pioneers buried here. Sometimes the cemetery is referred to as "The Winters Place." It has also been called "Cottonwood Terrace" and "The Hendrix Cemetery." Location: The Hendrix Cemetery is between I-45 and Hwy 75 a few miles north of Fairfield city limits. From Fairfield, travel Hwy 75 out of town and The cemetery is near Cottonwood Creek on the H. Shepherd A-34. The Hendrix Cemetery is near the old Talley cemetery, but is likely further away from Hwy 75.
