Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Hickory Grove Cemetery (Also known as "Jameson Cemetery") [Note - History of Freestone County, Vol II incorrectly duplicates the data for the same graves under the title of Hickory Grove Cemetery and under the title of Jameson Cemetery.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status: Inactive since 1936. GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 31.760N; Longitude: -96.122W Latitude: 31.76060, Longitude: -96.12280 History: James Thomas Jameson, a farmer (born in Mississippi), married Ella Ray in Freestone County, Texas on 24 Feb 1876. Ten years later, he married Mary Ann Webb in Freestone County, Texas on 21 Apr 1886 by Rev. William B. Childs. Background: This was the cemetery for the ghost town of Hickory Grove. The community boasted a cotton gin and store at one time. There was the Hickory Grove School (established in 1870) within less than 150 feet of the cemetery. During 1893-1894 school enrollment was 24. Horace Dwayne Chappell attended this school and remembered more markers than there are now. There was no fence at the time, so some could be covered over at the edges. History of the Area: Bethel Assembly of God Church (1934-1988): Founder was Robert Quinton Hankins. Began in 1933 as brush arbor meeting between Hickory Grove School and Jameson Cemetery. Church building started in 1934. Original land was donated by Poindexter and Riley (a land company) and the parcel was previously owned by Arch Gunter. In April 1938, affliated with Assembly of God. Church closed in 1988. The church building was moved after its closure and now resides at the Freestone County Museum. William Jospeh Williams came to Freestone County settling near Young after the Civil War. He is buried here because he died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Preston Day when she was caring for him since he was nearly 70. Location: Located E of Fairfield toward Young. The cemetery is located west of the Fairfield Lake State Recreation Area. Directions: From Fairfield, go out of town on FM-488. Turn right at fork onto FM-2570. At next fork (FM-2470 and FM-3285), turn left (staying on FM-2470) . Go .2 miles. Right side of the road. It nows has a chain link fence with well marked name over the gate.
