Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Hill Cemetery #1 (a.k.a. Blount community cemetery) (East of Fairfield Lake) (near old Blount/Rock Springs community) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background: Source - Avis Eisen: "Blount had graves outside the fenced area of the Hill Cemetery and at one time the area was pushed." This served as the primary cemetery for the Blount community. This is also called Hill Cemetery because of the wealthy landowners Hill family that owned the land around the cemetery for many generations and also for the Hill family members buried here. The cemetery was located near the at old home site of the Fred E. Hill family. Dr. Henry Suel Hill and his wife Martha Speir/Spear married about 1842 in Mississippi, lived in Scott County, Mississippi before moving to Freestone County, Texas between 1863 and 1870. Dr. Henry S. Hill was a Mason listed as a member of the Pine Bluff Masonic Lodge #85, A.F. & A.M. at Rock Springs, Texas - Fairfield post office (this would later merge into the Fairfield Masonic Lodge). Dr. Henry S. Hill served as the medical doctor for the town of Rock Springs until his death in 1894. Dr. Tolbert Fannin Young Sr. and Margaret E. Hill Young were well known residents of the Young community in Freestone County. Dr. Young traveled serving the communities of eastern part of Freestone County such as Rehoboth, Blount, and Young. Two of their children are buried here. John Rebel Wooten and his wife Nellie Jones are buried in Fairfield cemetery but two of their sons are buried here. Status: Began around 1870. Abandoned around 1913. Situated on private property east of Fairfield Lake. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Directions #1: At the Fairfield City Limit Sign on East Hwy 84 go 4.9 miles to Co Road 1364. Make a left. From the 79/84 Junction take Hwy 84 about 15 miles and go to County Road 1364. Make a right. Go 1 mile and take Co. Road 240 for 3.3 miles and the veer to the left on FCR 235 and go 2.8 miles. The cemetery is on the left in a pasture. The cemetery is in an old fence and you really have to look for it. You can only see the tops of two head stones from the road. Directions #2: On west side of county road connecting FM 1364 and FM 2750, about 100 yards off the road and Myrtal Branch. Layout: Long axis aligned about N1 degree W. Covers an area of about 9,628 feet or 0.22 acre. Enclosed by an old style metal graveyard fence with metal posts. Number of Graves: There are 22 marked graves (according to H of FC, Vol I, pg. 196, published 1978). In H of FC Vol II (published 1989), only 13 listed. Oldest Grave: May 18, 1873 Dr. Henry S. His wife then married James S. Hinton in 1880. She and her second husband are buried at the Union Cemetery in Henderson County at Cross Roads. There exists some occupation tax receipts as a licensed doctor from Oct to Dec 1875 and May to Dec 1876 for Freestone County where he paid some county tax to James Pressly Robinson, the sheriff. Towles, Mary Ann (Hill) ? - d 1878 Berry and her lived at Rock Springs in 1860. Berry remarries Sarah Ann (Collins) Files in 1880.
