Freestone County, Texas Hill Cemetery #2 (SE of Streetman) (aka Old Hill Cemetery) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status: Abandoned around 1937. Background: William Benjamin Hill gave the land for the cemetery in the early 1860's. The oldest marked grave is from 1869. William Benjamin Hill married Margaret Jane Coleman Hill on 5 Feb 1846 in the city of Mobile, Alabama. William Benjamin Hill and his wife move to the Streetman area by 1854. Burials probably began here with the death of William's mother-in-law in 1863 during the American Civil War in an unmarked grave. J.A. Coleman said the first grave was placed at Hill Cemetery for his great- grandmother Coleman. After her death, the family was unable to travel to Woodland Cemetery, their chosen burial place, because the creeks were flooded and the waters did not recede for several days. Mr. Hill allowed the family to bury Mrs. Coleman on his property. In 1901, J.D. Hill and wife Mary F. Hill deeded land for hte cemetery, which included the Coleman grave site. Directions: 1.3 miles S of Streetman. East on Farm Road. Also about 1/2 mile east of old Highway 75.
