Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Holly Grove Cemetery ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status: Abandoned and Destroyed. It is believed that only one broken stone remains. Location: Located about 14.5 miles SE of Teague near I-45. 5.4 miles NW of Buffalo near Leon County line. West of I-45 and highway 75. Suggested Source for More Information: Dorene Loveall Directions: From Teague: Go 7.4 miles east on TX-179 till you hit I-45. Go south on I- 45 towards Buffalo for 5 miles. Exit at County Road 675 onto the frontage road. Go a mile and turn right onto county road 694. After a mile, turn left onto county road 691. From Buffalo: Go north on I-75 going past Donie Road (a.k.a. CR 164) leaving Buffalo city limits. Continue down I-75 over a creek. Turn left on county road 691 that goes over I-45 (this is about 3.2 miles north of Buffalo). Continue down 1.8 miles till you reach the cemetery. Heavy forest trees will be on your right. Some light tree on right. Cemetery is in broken trees about 10 yards from road. A large mining/gravel operation is located to the west of the cemetery. Oldest Grave: Fannie Kulberth 26 Nov 1899 Latitude: 313041N; Longitude: 0960657W Latitude: 31.51140, Longitude: -96.11580 Background: The Holly Grove community began around 1900. About 15 students enrolled in the school in 1903. During the 1930s the Holly Grove community comprised a few scattered dwellings and a business nearby. It never got big enough to have its own post office. By the 1980s only the Holly Grove Cemetery remained at the site. It is believed that in the 1990s, the Holly Grove Cemetery was destroyed.
