Freestone County Cemeteries Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery (a.k.a. Hope Well Cemetery of Teague) (near Teague) Hope Well Cemetery #2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGS Map: Teague North Quadrangle by Eric Wood with major assistance from Doyle Jones Status: Active [WARNING - This cemetery is a traditionally Anglo-American burial ground. There is another Hopewell cemetery located in Freestone County on the shores of the modern Fairfield Lake that is a traditionally Africian-American burial ground.] Background: Andrew Jackson Jones, youngest son of John & Mary Story Jones, donated a parcel of land for a community burial ground in early 1873. He named Hopewell Cemetery after his church in Fayette Co., AL, Hopewell Primitive Baptist church. Andrew Jackson and his family moved to Wise Co., TX and is buried in the Jonestown Cemetery in Wise Co., TX. Andrew's older brother was John S. Jones. John would be the first burial in Hopewell cemetery. The Jones family was Primitive Baptist but allowed the church building to be used by other denominations. From about 1891 to about 1927, the church building served also as a school house. Citizens buried from communities of Hopewell and Pyburn. Location: In the Hopewell community located about 2.5 miles NW of the old town of Brewer that would later become Teague. The cemetery is adjacent to Hopewell Primitive Baptist church. Hopewell Cemetery is shown on a 1982 map by the U.S. Geological Survey of the Teague North Quadrangle. Directions #1: From Highway 84 West, turn right onto FM 1367. Turn left onto dirt road at Teague's city limit sign. Keep going until you can make a right turn. Hopewell cemetery is at the end of the road. Directions #2: To get to the cemetery from Teague, go west on Hwy 84 towards Mexia. Turn right onto Old Simsboro Road, just before Hwy 84 curves to the left and goes under the railroad tracks.
