Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Johnson Cemetery [sometimes referred to as "Johnson Negro Cemetery" in older newspapers] (African American cemetery) [Do not confuse with Joseph Burton Johnson cemetery in the area or Johnson- Glazener Cemetery at Plum Creek area] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 31.7831, Longitude: -96.2328 Background: Edgar Johnson gave two acres of woodland for a church and cemetery to freedmen that were former slaves. Site was named Long's Chapel after Dave Long, a former slave to Johnson. Rough Location: SW of Rhode Island community. NW of Fairfield on Hwy 75. E of Kirvin. Rural mail route 1 of Fairfield. Directions: Take North Hwy 75 and go 4.2 miles from the Fairfield City Limit sign. There is a sign for the Johnson cemetery on the right. Make a left and go 6 tenths of a mile to the triangular intersection. At this intersection there is a old white building that was the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and also served as a Grange Hall. (This area was formerly known as the Pin Oak community or later the Grange Hall community.) Take a right and go 1 mile. (You will pass the Joseph Burton Johnson cemetery). Cemetery is on left and is enclosed inside a chain link fence. It has a black tube gate at the entrance.
