Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Kendrick Family Cemetery (in former Box Church community near Mills) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGS Map: Dew Quadrangle GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 31.5961, Longitude: -96.2308 Directions: Located 5 miles SE of Teague. From Teague, take the road going to Luna (#1451). Turn left going east on #204. Go one mile and it is on the right just prior to the #223 and #204 intersection. The intersection also might be the 720 and 711. Background: On property formerly owned by Elder J.L. Walker. Passed to his son Richard Harley Walker who died in 1985. This is the old Box Church community near Luna Road. Elder J.L. Walker's old house has been torn down and timbers burned. The first fence around the cemetery was barbed-wire and erected in the early 1940's by Jack Eppes, Sr. and Dr. E.I. Baty. John Mannning Eppes collected money for a new fence. In the early 1950's, a cyclone fence was erected with the help of funding by Marion Webb, Landis Baty, Lloyd Knight, and others. John M. Eppes, Richmond Eppes, Landis Baty, and Bill Kindon erected the cyclone fence. Thomas and Mary Fuller Kendrick had twelve children, all grew to maturity except one, and ten of them coming to TX. Alsa F. died in 1858. Isaac Shelton was the son of Drury/Drewy Shelton. Isaac married Annis Mercer in Alabama. Issac moved to Ashley Co., Ark. in 1845 where lived until 1862 when came to Freestone County, TX. Issac volunteered for service in T.W. Whitt's Company in the Texas state militia. Isaac gaurded federal prisoners at Tyler. Cemetery Description: Heavily overgrown cemetery. Number of Graves: 14 to 15. Oldest Marked Grave: Isaac W. Shelton 1866 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "First grave thru the gate (iron ore rock just at the base of the tree) is the grandfather or grandmother of Babe Reynolds (wife of Jackie Pyburn of Teague)." The petrified wood to the right of the shell grave is that of Mary Fuller Kendrick." [McCarver Kendrick] [grandson of Mary Fuller Kendrick] Large petrified wood marks Kendrick, Mary Fuller w/o Thomas [Mary Fuller was born 1809 in SC. Mary married Thomas Kendrick. Moved to TX in 1855. Thomas Kendrick died in 1863 and buried at unknown location. Mary died 25 Nov 1885 at age 76.] Shelton, Issac W. ?- 1866 CSA T.W.
