Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Nettles Family Cemetery ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background: This is the family cemetery of William Bluford and Margaret Burleson Nettle. The cemetery was started when their son Joel died shortly after the 1850 Limestone County census. [In 1851, Freestone County was split from Limestone County.] The Nettle family would leave for Brazil in 1866. Eventually they returned in about 1881. The Nettle family and the Burleson families are one of the earliest in Freestone County area arriving about 1835. Directions: Located on county road east of Kirvin on way to Interstate 45. This cemetery is about 5 miles from Kirvin. This road is known as the old Kirvin Fairfield Road. The cemetery is located near the former Woodland / Bonner community. Oldest Grave: Joel Nettle 1851 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nettle, Bryon 07/11/1869-02/09/1898 [Bryon was born in Brazil in 1869 (his parents left Texas in 1866). The Nettle family returned abt 1881. Bryon worked for the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad and was murdered by a fellow employee train conductor while working as a railroad detective in the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). He was apparently killed outside of Colbert, Bryon Co., OK before crossing the Red River and entering Denison, Texas. Bryon's corpse was identified by his brother David O.
