Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Rehoboth Baptist Church Cemetery (a.k.a. Rehobeth or Young Cemetery) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGS Map: Young Quadrangle Submitted by: Eric Bonner Wood Correction help by Linda Mullen Status: Was active, but now is slowly becoming inactive with its remoteness due to the ever changing roads from the local coal plant. Background: This cemetery was for the Rehoboth community and the Baptist church located here that later became Round Prairie Missionary Baptist church in November 17, 1883. This cemetery was located about a mile north of Dr. Tolbert Fannin Young's home. The church building was located next to the cemetery until 1892, when the church moved because W. H. Henderson deeded one acre of land (about a quarter mile west of Young's home) for the church and a school. Young was a thriving community in 1870s-1880s and later in the 1920s. GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 31.855815, Longitude: -96.084530 [the cemetery gate: GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 31.8556, Longitude: -96.0833] [Unfortunately listed as "Rehobath Cemetery" with an "a" instead of "o" on the government census GPS data that was used as a source by Google Maps and others.] Cemetery Description: Chain link fence encircles cemetery. White and black sign that says "Rehoboth Cemetery Est. 1867". There are many unmarked graves. Rehoboth was a voting precinct as early as 1878 Rehoboth church listed 21 Baptist members led by J.D. Williams in 1883 Rehoboth church listed 20 Baptist members led by W.B. Childs in 1886 85 registered voters cast their ballot at the poll booth at Rehoboth for the 1886 election. Rehoboth church listed 24 Baptist members in 1887 Rehoboth school had 32 students in 1887 Rehoboth school had 31 pupils in 1891-2. Rehoboth school had 17 pupils in 1893-4. By 1900, the area is known as Young. Location: In the Young community, NE of Fairfield and N of the modern Fairfield Lake. Located north of the Young community overlooking Prairie Creek. Won't some effort be made to secure the services of a minister at Rehoboth for 1888? We regret to see a place of worship that is so dear to many people of this neighborhood, and which is the resting place of nearly all the old settlers and many of their descendants, treated with neglect. Let us all turn out some idle day and round up the graves nicely and cut out all of the brush and weeds. What say you? - ROB ROY " -------------------------- Fairfield Recorder - Jan. 26, 1900 edition: YOUNG - Some few of the people have moved the old Rehoboth Church in front of T.H.
