Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries [Warning - There are two Sand Hill communities in Freestone County.] Sand Hill Cemetery (formerly old Bethel community cemetery) (Africian-American Cemetery) [NOTE - The Evans family cemetery (an Anglo cemetery) is located just outside the gates.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGS Map: Butler Quadrangle Latitude: 31.7378, Longitude: -95.9275 Status: Active, but infrequent General Location: About 5 miles north of Butler Cemetery Description: 3 acres of sandy rolling hills with large shade trees. Cyclone fence with two double entry gates. Directions: (From the Long Lake junction) take Hwy 84 West 9 miles to Co Road 489 East and (From Fairfield) take Hwy 84 East about 11 miles to Co. Road 489 East and go 4.6 miles. (Both:) Take a left on Co. Rd. 240 for 1.3 miles. The Cemetery is on the left inside chain link fence. Directions: E of Fairfield on Hwy 84 about 10 miles, turn right on a dirt road called Rabbit Ridge Road. East of Indian Creek Lake. Off country road 240. Directions: (from Fairfield) Hwy 84 east. Take a left onto FM-489. Continue till FM-489 turns to the right passing two churches. Cemetery on left on atop a hill and about 3 miles from Hwy 84. Background: This cemetery is the burial ground for the residents of Bethel, an African American community located a couple miles north of Butler. In 1891, Bethel had 19 black students enrolled in school and two churches that still exist: Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church and Pine Hill. Other cemeteries in the area are Lone Star and Maise. This cemetery was originally Bethel Cemetery if one is looking for obituaries in old newspapers and has been renamed Sand Hill Cemetery. The cemetery began as a burial place of slaves of the Evans' family.
