Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Shanks Memorial Cemetery (near Kirvin, Freestone Co., TX.) (a.k.a. Liberty Hill Cemetery) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGS Map: Teague North Quadrangle Memorial: Shanks Cemetery Memorial - June 5, 2010 - 11:00 a.m. Hwy 80 & County Road 950 - Shirley Parkhill 903-599-3193 or 903-389611 Status: Active Researchers: Bobby Sharp, Janie Moncrief Blevins, Carl, JoAnn McBride, Eric Wood, and Henry C.Draper Jr. Directions: 3 miles south of Kirvin, on 950 just east of FM 80. Historical Marker: Matthews and Robert Shanks of Alabama settled here with their families in 1859. A small farming community developed, and in 1870 a school was built on a one-acre site donated by R. C. Murray. Land beside the schoolyard became a public burial ground, known as Shanks Cemetery after Shanks Post Office opened in 1896. The earliest recorded burial was Burgess A. Whatley (1854-1892). In 1893 G. W. Bell deeded another half acre east of the graveyard. The school building was torn down in 1917. Shanks Cemetery Association has maintained the site since 1935. Oldest Marked Grave: 1892 Burgess A. Whatley Number of Graves: over 340 (80+ unmarked) GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 31.7322, Longitude: -96.3308 Located: The cemetery is just east of the Trinity and Brazos Railroad line and is so close that you should be able to see the trains go by. This is located south of Kirvin along the Trinity and Brazos Railroad line and north east of Cotton Gin. Background: The old part of the cemetery was sometimes referred to as "Liberty Hill cemetery" in local newspapers prior to 1900. Liberty Hill church was a Primitive Baptist church that existed in Shanks. I have marked graves as being buried in the "Liberty Hill cemetery" as *LH*. Valarie Hedrick on October 15, 2013: "From the time I was a little girl I was told that the school was located where the tabernacle stands today in the cemetery. My mother and her sister went to school there. Alma Day Sharp & Lois Mildred Day Padgett(my mother). They are both buried there. About 1940 the church stood across the railroad on the west side of 80. I attended church there as a little girl. I don't know of another church [in reference to another church adjacent to other church on other side of railroad shown in 1917 soil map] being there close." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2009 Memorial: Shanks Cemetery Association annual memorial will be Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Shanks Cemetery located Highway 80 and CR 950.
