Freestone County, Texas Cemeteries Stroud Cemetery (a.k.a Oakwood Colored Cemetery or Daniel Cemetery or Haze Daniel Cemetery) (at Rocky Mount Community) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- by Eric Bonner Wood Status: Active Background: African American Cemetery established during slavery that continued to be used by family members through the 20th century. Currently difficult to access and overgrown, although stones are said to exist they cannot be seen. Please note: These two cemeteries are located in a community called Rocky Mount, which is clearly denoted in the 1950 US Census as being located between Butler and Oakwood, along Rocky Mount Road, County Road 300 and County Road 331. Plum Creek community is several miles to the west. Rocky Mount is a community located between the "Plum Creek" community and the town of Oakwood. (Oakwood is in adjacent Leon County). Founded by Beeton Stroud and other family members. The farm lands around Rocky Mount is drained by Keechi Creek. Rocky Mount was about a mile west of the Liberty community and about two miles north of Oakwood. Rocky Mount school existed in 1887 until consolidated in the 1930s. Directions: Go about 2 miles north of Oakwood on Rocky Mount Road/FCR 331. Cemetery is about ˝ mile west down a private dirt road, through a pasture, under the powerlines, to a chain link fence.
