Common abbreviations for sources used: *LC50* = 1850 Census for Limestone Co., Texas *FCT51* = 1851 Freestone County tax roll Tax Assessment Notes: Think of the tax assessment as an annual census. The tax list is a great tool for finding deceased individuals from 1851-1889 (until our oldest existing Freestone County newspapers become plentiful enough to track things). Index Number Notes: Index numbers were added ahead of people's entries and "for" entries to track position in document. The focus was on tracking of people skipping partnerships. My document references are *FCT52* 90. For overlooked entries feel free to add 0.5 to the end (like 90.5). SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS: "1st" = first appearance in tax rolls ABBREVIATIONS: "Do." or tick marks = Ditto [I will usually lowercase the abbreviation to make it stand out more] "agt. for" = agent for "guar. for" = guardian for (so X is child that person has guardianship over) "admin. of"/"executor"/"exr" = executor of estate of person X (so X has recently died) "adminix."/"executrix" = usually female executor of estate (usually the wife) "Grantee" = who first started as the land owner "cont." = continued [on "the next" or "from the prior" page] "dec." or "dec'd." = deceased "heirs" = people that benefit from the estate (usually based on will, but could be probated) "senr" = senior "junr" = junior NOTES: No partnerships yet in 1852. The first tax assement where town lots existed in 1852. The only "towns" are Fairfield, Springfield [Limestone Co.], and Troy. Cotton Gin is still just a few families living close to each other. I suggest reading about Preemption of 320 acres as that is still in effect. CREEK NOTES: The waters tell where the parcel is. The Trinity River runs the length of Freestone County in the east. The parcels on the Keechi creek are listed as on the "Chic" creek, by this tax assessor. I have altered these to be properly named. The Upper Keechi creek runs from the SE corner of the county north and west to Fairfield, TX. Tehuacana Creek runs the length of the northern part of the county. Regardless of how it is spelled on the original document, it will appear as Tehuacana. Grindstone creek runs south from Tehuacana down to modern Teague, TX area. Cedar Creek is a short creek that runs from Tehuacana in the north down to near Fairfield, TX. The Cottonwood creek is one of Cedar creek's branches. Richland Creek is in the extreme NE corner of the county. Lambs creek is a short creek in extreme SW corner of the county. Buffalo creek is a creek in the SW and S part of Freestone county. PARCEL NOTES: "F.P. Cabler" grantee is for Francis P. Cabler's (d 21 January 1845) parcel in NW part of Freestone Co., TX. or his second parcel located SW of Fairfield, TX. "Jesse Korn" grantee is for Jesse Korn's parcel to the east of Fairfield. "Reddin Gainer" grantee parcels are usually spelled "Reden Gainer" by the tax assessor. His parcel contains the future location of Fairfield, TX. "Isaac Caradine" grantee parcels are located SW of Fairfield, TX. The "James James" grantee parcel is found east of Stewards Mill, TX.
