Freestone County, Texas Land/Property The surveying of Freestone County, Texas *1* *2* Freestone County, Texas was part of the David G. Burnet[a.k.a. Burnett] colony. In 1826, David got permission to settle 300 families from the Mexican goverment in the province of Texas in the area north of the Old Spanish Road and around Nacogdoches. In 1835, the Galveston Bay Land and Colonization Company began to locate claims advertising the land under the head of Burnett's, Vehlein's and Zavala's colonies.
