Last fall Julius W. Martin, ex-constable of Cotton Gin precinct, killed one Roddy, a prisoner in his charge, who attempted to escape. The grand jury kindly indicted Martin for negligent homicide. He was tried, found guilty, and fined $50. The inference is that if any one in Freestone county thinks his life is worth over $50 he had better not try to make his escape from a constable if arrested by one. ----------------------------------------------------- Brenham Weekly Banner newspaper (of Brenham, Texas) March 21, 1879 edition - Page 2 In Freestone county, squire Mayes married a couple and took as pay, a pocket knife and box of matches.
