Freestone County, Texas History & News of 1922 Lynchings San Pedro News Pilot (of San Pedro, CA), 9 May 1922, Page 6 Texas Rangers to Quell Uprising of Blacks AUSTIN, Tex., May 9 - Governor Neff today ordered two detachments of Texas rangers to Fairfield, county sent of Freestone county, immediately, to prevent an uprising by negroes that Sheriff Mayo declared imminent. Mayo said negroes of Freestone county threatened to avenge the death of three negroes burned at the stake at Kirvin Saturday for the assault and murder of Miss Lula Aausley [sic, Ausley], 17-year-old school girl. Capt. Frank Hamer of ranger headquarters company at Austin will leave at once for Fairfield with one detachment of rangers. The other detachment is to come from Fort Worth under command of Capt. Tom Hickman.
