Freestone County, Texas History Fairfield Recorder newspaper - Thrusday, May 5, 1932 edition Citizens Meet Around Banquet Board; Vote to Form Organization Pursuant of previous announcement, citizens of Fairfield met at the Cook Hotel, Thrusday night, thirty-one covers being laid. The object of the occasion was to consider the organization of a civic club to promote worth while enterprises in Fairfield. W. A. Parker presided as toastmaster, W. V. Geppert giving the invocation. Two vocal solos by Travis Glazener with Mrs. Eloise Lindley at the piano, were well received. An enjoyable feature of the entertainment program was the "country grand opera" by Sam Elliott, pianist; Mr. O'Banion, fiddler, and Ed Evans with the guitar. Son Lott enlivened one of their numbers with a "breakdown" that "shook down" the house. The principal speaker of the evening was Geo. H. Leonard, a war-veteran, attached to the Kerrville sanitarium. Mr. Leonard before entering the war, was a professional ball player. He used in his talk two subjects, Capt. McGlothlin and Christy Matthewson. His talk dealt with the life of a soldier and the horrors of war. His descriptions were vivied and he held hearers throughout his talk.
