June 24 - The plan for orderly development of the Cayuga oil field in Anderson and Freestone counties Texas was approved today by Secretary Ickes. The plan provides for one well for each 20 acres it includes a provision that not more than 75 producing wells, including existing ones, shall be brought in during the current calenday year. Drilling operations are to be suspended if the allowable daily production of the pool reached 10,000 barrels before December 10, 1934. The plan affects an estimated potential oil-bearing area of 12,000 acres. It was recommended by 98 per cent of the field's operators. Operators are to divide equitably the 75 wells. The Cayuga field is the one which E. O. Thompson, Texas railroad commissioner, told the House Interstate Commerce Committee, during hearings on the oil control measure, was to be limited to seven wells. Severe criticism was levelled at the oil administration on the grounds that only seven were to be permitted in the area. Ickes said today that when the field was discovered he had "specified strictly as a temporary expedient and to prevent a runaway competitive drilling race that no more than seven exploratory wells should be drilled while awaiting submission of a permanent plan for developing this potential oil area on a fair and equitable basis and to provide for the stability of the industry."
