Freestone County, Texas Communities Old Ghost Towns - Never had a post office: Hickory Grove Hickory Grove is located between Fairfield and Ward Prairie. The community boasted a cotton gin and store at one time. There was the Hickory Grove School (established in 1870) within less than 150 feet of the cemetery. During 1893-1894 school enrollment was 24. The Jameson family owned land here. Hickory Grove residents always had Fairfield as the nearest post office. [Warning - There is a ghost town called "Hickory Grove" community in Leon County that existed in the 1900s on the Jewett/Bowling road that once had a one room church/school building and at least nine houses near land drained by Brushy Creek. This Jewett/Bowling road was first laid out and built in 1877, predating the community.
