Freestone County, Texas Communities Old Ghost Towns - Never had a post office: Jordan's Chapel The Jordan's Chapel community appears on a soil map of Freestone County from 1918. Jordan Chapel was located between Teague and Fairfield, just off the main road and closer to Teague. The community built a small local church house called Jordan's Chapel that hosted Methodist permanent preachers in some years and circuit preachers in other years. The old "Pyburn" community was located about a half mile north. Pyburn actually had a post office from 1895 to 1907 and would have been the mail center for Jordan's Chapel. The other nearby community was Hick Springs. When Jordan's Chapel had a newspaper column they report news from Hick Springs, specifically the school there. Soil good for cotton, oats, beans, Irish potatoes and dewberries. *31* *32* Sally Augusta (Peevy) Jones (wife of James Raleigh Jones) writes of her recollections of Jordan's Chapel in July 1933 and mentions it was more widely known as Pyburn village. She wrote article for the Fairfield Recorder under the pen name of "Lois". She was the daughter of Henry Hubbard Peevy. *52* School: Jordan Chapel public school #100. Had 18 white students *16* with Prof. Garrison teaching in 1895 *13* [Seems to only last one year.] [Most pupils seem to go to the Hick Springs public school after 1895.] The "Jordan Chapel Locals" column in April 1898 says "Miss Lora Griffith of Fairfield will begin a subscription school at Hick Springs next Monday." *28* Church: Jordan's Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church South - Springfield District of the "North-west Texas Conference" in 1869 Bros. Some of our farmers are laying by corn, and others planting cotton. Miss Ada Burleson, of Mills, visited releatives in this community last week. Thos. Taylor, Jr., of Dew, was seeing after his interests in this part of the country last Sunday. Some boys have a prodigious over-plus of the brazen characteristic, while others have a stupendous inadequacy. Irish potato and dewberry time has come again, and they abound in an abundance. They some times make ye scribe feel like that the "prosperity wave" has made its debut.
