Freestone County, Texas Communities [NOTE - There was two Liberty Baptist churches listed in the 1895 Freestone County Association. This is Liberty #1. The other Liberty church was near Cotton Gin.] Liberty Liberty was located in the SE corner of Freestone County near the Limestone County and Anderson County borders. Nearby places are Butler, Forest Glade, and Oakwood. (Oakwood is in Limestone County.) The area around Liberty is drained by Caney Creek that follows directly into the Trinity River. Liberty was near the old Bonner ferry on the Trinity river. Like many communities of the times, Liberty had a church building that was used by multiple denominations. In April 1886, it was reported that Liberty was lacking a school for the kids and Oakwood was the closest post office. Later in July, they started a school for the children with Judge D. Burlsmith as the teacher. Liberty still appears on maps from 1918. School: Libery School (appears in list of Free Public Schools for the County on Jan. 1872) in April 1886, without school in July 1886, Judge D. Burlsmith taught 38 students in 1887 under management of Professor J.B.A. Folk 40 pupils in 1893-94 eventually consolidated with Oakwood Church: Liberty Church had preaching twice a month in 1886 - Mr. Woods, a Baptist minister on first Sunday and Rev.
