Freestone County, Texas Communities Old Ghost Towns - Never had a post office: Mount Pleasant William Mynatt Peck was probably the first to settle the Mount Pleasant area in 1849 in what was then Limestone County that in 1850 was considered Freestone County. After the Civil War, Mount Pleasant became a predominately Africian- American community located about 3 miles southeast of Lanely. The land around Mount Pleasant is drained by Mustang Creek on the south and Plum Creek on the north. Mount Pleasant Baptist Church probably dates back to the 1880s or earlier and was still standing in 1990. Next to the church is the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery swallowed by large trees. Mount Pleasant school has a long consistent tradition of educating Africian- American students. Scholastic census records and newspapers of the time tell us that Mount Pleasant school had 15 black pupils in 1887, 39 in 1891-2 school year, 62 in 1893 and 14 in 1903. The school closed after shortly after 1930.
