Freestone County, Texas Towns Jonesville Abe Jones, a former slave, also owned over 1000 acres and had a cotton gin, grist mill, and store. This area became known as Jonesville and many descendants such as the Brown and Cunningham families live there. ------------------------------------------------------ Plum Creek Plum Creek is located about halfway betwen Lanely and Butler about 6 1/2 miles east of Dew on what is now FM 489 in an area. The John L. Johnson family owned much of the land that is now Plum Creek Ranch on the south side of FM 489. The Johnson / Glazner Cemetery was inadvertently excavated and rediscovered by a gravel company in the 1960s. In the 1930s the community had a business, a couple churches, a school, a couple cemeteries, and a number of scattered dwellings. School: Plum Creek School: 22 Anglo students in 1887. Trahan/Trahin School: Started in 1891, Trahan School was just south of FM 489 on FCR 381 and was listed on the 1912 school list. The pupils were transferred to Buffalo in about 1968. In 1899 forty-eight black and thirty-five white students were enrolled in separate Plum Creek schools. The last common school district was Trahan, which operated into the 1970's in a small two-room schoolhouse, just to maintain the county school superintendents office and jobs. Black Jack Grove College Plum Creek College Church: Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church Brown Chapel Church began as a log cabin school/church building on John L. Johnson's land about a mile from the present site. Gabe Brown donated the present site of the cemetery and church land. Brown Chapel started about 1887. Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church People believe Frank and Liza Hayes gave the land for the church and cemetery. Plum Creek Baptist Church petitioned in 1887 to join the Prairie Grove Baptist Association 23 members led by J.W. Wood in 1887 53 members led by J.W.
