Freestone County, Texas Communities Old Ghost Towns - with former Post office: Pyburn Pyburn community was located about half way between Teague and Fairfield. A soil map of Freestone County in 1918 shows "Pyburn School" with two structures that could be schools and/or churches and a cemetery. Probably named after Andrew Jackson Pyburn who arrived settled what was to become Pyburn in 1895. Pyburn was located about half a mile southeast of the old Driver community. The Pyburn area is drained by the Keechi Creek. To the south about a half mile is "Jordan Chapel". Cemeteries: Driver/Pyburn Cemetery Post Office: Pyburn had a post office between Aug. 6th, 1895 and Feb 21, 1907. The Valosta post office closed and used Pyburn as its post office in 1903 after only being open for a year. School: Pyburn School taught children from about 1896 to Sept. 21, 1948 (when it was consolidated with Teague Independent School District). In 1902 when the school building at Hicks Springs (between Teague and Fairfield, closer to Fairfield) burned, the children were sent to finish their education at the Pyburn Community school. One of the teachers of the many over the years who taught at Pyburn was Grace Henderson Grayson. Church: Social Organizations: Farmers Union Pyburn organizes a Farmers Union in Dec. 1903 according to page 1 of the Fairfield Recorder Jan. 8, 1904 issue.
