Freestone County, Texas Towns and Communities Settlement of Sand Town Springs by Eric Bonner Wood Sand Town Springs is a ghost town and a very early at that. Sand Town Springs seems to be a settlement on the Trinity River in the northeastern part of old Limestone County that later became Freestone County in 1851. The Weaver family were one of the residents and moved there in 1844. [Elizabeth Barnes' research in H of FC, Vol I, #858 on page 624]. We can infer that this was in Precinct 3 of Limestone County in the 1850 census by Ezekiel Weaver's household along with the known citizens of Troy. [#154 in 1850 Limestone census.] This "Sand Town" community was near to Troy and served as a rest stop. Sand Town was near a spring. [Elizabeth Daugherty research - see H of FC, Vol I, p 70]. Issac Malone moved into Mercer Colony in Texas in 1846 from Blenville Parish, Louisana. Isaac Malone received grant #997 for 640 acres in Navarro County (that later became part of Freestone County). These lands were located on the Malone Branch of Big Brown Creek near old Pine Bluff on the Trinity River. This town was also known as Troy or Sand Town Springs. Isaac's farm bordered Ezekiel Weaver on the north and Thomas Malone on the south. [Ira Malone's research in H of FC, Vol II, #515 on page 346] Troy was on the bank of the river. Sand Town was about 1/2 mile back from the river. [Billie Hugh Bonner, Jr. - current land owner]. The family of Edwards Washington Childs came to Freestone County, Texas in 1865 settling in Sandtown, a small community near Cooks Ferry on the Trinity River [Sylvia Childs in p. 316 Freestone County History Bk., Vol I.].
