Freestone County, Texas Communities Turlington (a.k.a. Sugar Hill) Turlington was named for Dr. Turlington. Located on the "Butler road" about 8 miles east of Fairfield. Turlington was known by travellers for its adjacent fine-powdered sandy hill called "Sugar Hill" that was infamous to stick wagons. Turlington was a small community that had a number of businesses, but no churches. With the Methodists traveling west to Mount Zion community to the Methodist church there and the Baptist travelling northward to Antioch Baptist Church in the Antioch community. In the 1880's the nearest school was Mount Zion. Eventually Spring school was built and later still the Sugar Hill Elementary School built in Turlington. The Pictorial History Vol I, pg. 47 has a picture of the Sugar Hill Elementary school. Post office: Opened in 03 Aug 1901. Ran until 15 Apr 1935.
