Due West S. C. June 14th 1880 My Dear Sallie: I have waited until almost the eleventh hour to recognize your nice and very acceptable pres- ents but I guess it is better late than never in this case as well as in all others. You have no idea how much surprised I was when it came. I didn't know you had mov ed and therefore I couldn't think for the life of me who I knew in Birdstone I assure you it recalled many pleasnt recollections of the past and it now has a place among my mementoes. I expect to keep it as long as I live and when I get to be an old woman it shall even then be the means of bringing pg2 one back to the many pleasant hours we have spent together. You said it was for my uniform but I prize it so highly I'm keeping it for Com? and think that perhaps I'll save it for my graduating dress. What are you doing with your self these hot days? I know you wish you were here to be examined next week. Time has flown on ??? wings this year and especially since Xmas. You know from experience how we are feeling just about this time with examination only a week ahead. I think I dread German? more than anything else. It is a very hard study and requires such close attention. If nothing prevents I have to speak in public on the stage Fri day afternoon but they will hard ly expect one of my age to do very much, at least this is the thought. pg3 with which I can be myself. Have you heard of our ????? xxxxxx? We are doing wonderful things in the Society this year. Friday night before Com? will have our just?Get? Effie Pressly (1880) is Pres and will have some kind of an address. Miss Kate Ranson (1880) from S.C.? will make an address and deliver the medals. The med als will be given to the best deba ter in the junior class, best compr. writer in the Soph. class, and best essay reader in the Freshman class. I don't know who will get these but they are mighly pretty and are worth trying for. For the two higher classes they are just round gold medals and for the other it is a gold pencil. The other exercises by Miss Anna (1875) Young,Sen or Valedictory by Hattie Young and Jun (1880) pg4 oir Valedictory by myself. I never was more surprised and never before knew how little I do know. Sat. morning ___ June From this date you will see that I didn't get my letter fin ished the other night. Since I wrote before we have had quite a change in the weather. It has been almost cold enough to put on winter clothes. ??ame spent the night with us last night. if she knew I was writing know she would send a message but she and sister are having such a nice time sleeping I won't wake them. Just one more day and examination begins! Our first ex will be in Botany Thursday morning. But when they do get started they come quick and fast. Dr. Bonner has pg5 (horz & top pg) gotten back from the Springs. He is looking much better than when he left, but is very feeble yet. Mr. Pearson is at the Springs now. He has had another spell very much like one he had when you were here only worse. Mr. Johnson (Laura's pa) is sick now. He is affected just like Mr. Pearson. pg 6 (horz) There is very little news of any consequince to write about I Corn? is the general topic of the day . You and? I care nothing for the boys, so I'll say something about them, except tell you about some "agruments do disagree" Addie L. an Tom P. (1879) have played quits so have Brennie Edwards and Mr. B, Emma Christian and Mr. Mathews, Mag Myers & Mr. P. (1877)(1879) By the way Eloise Phillips has a little sister in college this year, who is her image but nothing like her in the manners and dress. She the sweetest little thing! Calling her little may make you think she is only a child. She is in the Junior class but is very small. We have had twenty seven all togetherin our class this year. pg 7 (horz) We still have a large graduating class if they all come back. Two of them are from Texas Lucy Perryman and Maggie Anderson of the graduating class this year. i think there are nine in each of the graduating class this year. Lula Neel and Laura (1880) Johnson are in the S. class but (1882) will not graduate and Alice Bryson too but they are not included in the nine. Effie (1880) Pressly has the second Sevnor? and Jennie Anderson from Green (1880) ville the first. They are having some changes made on the church but I cant say they are inprovements. They have made a kind of vestibule in front with only one large door. I must close for this time. I am very much afraid you wont be able to read it now. Marie? has just woke up. She sends her love and says she will write soon, she says hurry up and send her that picture you promised. If you ever see any of our friends out there give them of love. Write soon. I will be delighted to hear from you any time. With much love I am your true friend Maggie H.
