[Letter of Bettie Bonner, May 6, 1919, to Joel Isaac Bonner] [Envelope wanting] [p. 1] Fairfield, Tex May 6, 1919 My dear dear Joel, How are you? We are all right we got your letter yesterday so glad to hear from you. It was written April 15. We haven’t heard any more from John L since he left Camp Mill, he was on his way to Camp Dodge. I wrote and told you about him landing. But I am sure he wrote you before he left over there, if he had a minute time. I know he wrote you. When you get back on this side won’t we all be so happy. I went to [the] garden this morning and gathered [p. 2] peas, turnip, lettuce & onions. We are going to have them for supper and after I gathered the vegetables I went all over the hog pasture and gather[ed] a quart of berries, so we are going to have a pie--it is the first we have had. Every body all around have had a good many. Artie has put up about 18 jars of berries. Aunt Lizzie was up here to day it is the first time she has been here since she got hurt. Papa, Sneed, and I went down to bottom field this evening and planted out some tomatoes. We are planting them their[there] [p. 3] in the sorghum patch. We have 10 rows of tomatoes planted. Their[They’re] going to plant about 3 more. Going to plant the rest of the patch in watermelon and muskmelon. Not going to plant any sorghum to make up this year. Papa says he just hasn’t got time. We sold 5 gallons of molasses yesterday evening to that Negro Govant. Joel, that negro Walter Hunter got home Sun. I don’t know where he went across or not. Fred Carter got to Fort Worth yesterday so guess he will be home in a few days. Hunter is plowing corn this week, Oliver has been helping J. B. plant cotton. [p. 4] Wed. Morn. May 7, 1919 We are all right, hope you are to[o]. We had a good rain this morn[ing]--it began to rain just as we got through eating breakfast so they haven’t gone to the field yet. I think they are going over and help J. B. diliver some goat to Cousin Willie he sold 30 head to Cousin Willie for $3.00 per head. He is just going to keep 10 head. Well, don’t know any thing else. With love Sister
