James M. Jones1 I was born in Blunt Co. Ala, in the year 1830 July 16th. My father was George J. Jones. My mother maiden name was Sarah Lauderdale. My father moved with his family in the winter of 1837 & 38 to Grimes Co., Texas, where he lived until the year of 1844, when he moved to Freestone Co., Texas, where we lived until after I was married, I was married to E.A. McBay on the 29th of June 1854 at Springfield in Limestone Co. When the Civil War broke out I like thousands of others thought I was called upon to shoulder arms in the defense of what we was told then was our rights accordingly, I enlisted in 1861 on the 20th, day of May in company 28 Texas Infantry commanded by O. Y. Young, was transferred in the spring of 1862 to the 12th Texas Cavalry commanded by W. H. Parsons, participated in the following battles Colton Plant, Surcey Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, Coucherville, Alexandria, and the Gun Boat Battle on the Red River in which Gen Tom Green was killed, and many other smaller ones. I had three brothers who entered the strife with me, all came out but one, which died from measles. I returned to my ole home after Lee surrendered and had to commence life anew. I still continued to live in Freestone Co., until the winter of 1867 & 68. When I moved to Frio Co. Texas, and settled near Howard Lake, were I lived until the year 1871, when I moved to Benton City, Atascosa Co., Texas where I am still living. 1 Civil War Pension note of James M. Jones, older brother of Jeremiah D. Jones. ?? ?? ?? ??
