Alawine, 21, of 1621 Hidalgo, was drowned Monday with four other Marines when an amphibious vehicle capsized in the surf during a practice landing operations at Camp Del Mar, Calif., authorities announced Saturday. Officers at Camp Pendleton, where Alawine was stationed, said his body was found pinned beneath the sunken LVT Friday, the Associated Press reported. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Lamar & Smith Funeral Home. Burial with military rites will be in Laurel Land Memorial Park. Alawine was born in Paris, Lamar County, and came to Dallas when he was ten years old. He left Crozier Technical High School in 1946 to enter the Marine Corps. After more than a year's service, Alawine was discharged and went to work in the Dallas parts department of Fruehauf Trailer Company. He was called back into the Marines last October and was assigned to radar duty in California. He was married to Miss Joan Willard of Fairfield, Freestone County, on March 6, 1948. Surviving are his wife of Dallas; his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny B. Burnthay of Dallas; his father, S. B. Alawine of Winnsboro, and a grandfather.
