Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Bryan - College Station Eagle April 1, 2005 Rachel Mary Allen May 27, 1913 — March 29, 2005 CENTERVILLE — Services for Rachel Mary Allen, 91, of Marquez are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville. Lenton Speer will officiate. Burial will be in Old Bowling Cemetery near Marquez. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to the time of services Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Allen died Tuesday in Fairfield. She was born near Marquez and lived most of her life on the Prather family home place. She attended Sam Houston State Teachers College and received a bachelor’s degree in 1937. Mrs. Allen was a member of the Work Projects Administration Sewing Project in Leon County and worked in the office of the Leon County Tax Assessor-Collector during World War II. Mrs. Allen taught high school home economics and served as assistant county superintendent from 1948 until the office closed in the late 1970s. She received her master’s in education from Sam Houston in 1958. She was a member of First Christian Church in Mexia and recently attended Church of Christ in Marquez. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Allen. Survivors include two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mattie Bea Medford of Huntsville and Marquez and Eleanor and Lawrence Dube of Rosenberg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
