Rev. Tyrus C. Petty, Jr., Rev. J. Stanley Hagadone and Rev. Jeff Powers will officiate with interment to follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday night at the First United Methodist Church in Teague. Allen Woodruff Bendy was born on December 16, 1917, the second of three children of Neyland Woodruff Bendy and Sadie Thatcher Bendy. His father had founded the clothing store known as N. W. Bendy Company in Teague in or around 1930, and in Allen’s early adult life, he went to work for the store, later became a partner with his father in the business, and ultimately became the sole owner, running the business until his retirement in about 1980. Many will remember that Bendy’s was located on the current site of Citizen’s National Bank. Allen married Catherine Marguerite Cox on the day before his twenty-first birthday in 1938. One child, Donald Neyland, was born of that marriage in 1943. Mog, as she was known by friends and acquaintances alike, was a stay at home mother until Don started school, at which time she began working in the store and continued to do so until it was sold when Allen decided to retire. In his early adult and middle years, Allen was extremely involved in various community organizations and endeavors. In his retirement years, however, his main love was fishing, which was an activity that he and Mog enjoyed together. Allen died on May 6, 2008, in the Haven Nursing Home in Mexia, Texas, where he had continuously resided since a serious automobile accident in 2001. He was preceded in death in 2002 by Mog, his loving wife of 63 years. He is survived by his son Don, an attorney in Eagle Lake, Texas, and Don’s wife Sandy; by grandson Kevin Allen Bendy and wife Gretchen, and their children, Avery and Blake of Austin, Texas; by Keith David Bendy and wife Cheryl, and their expected daughter Charlotte, of Austin, Texas; and by the staff at Haven Hursing Home in Mexia, who treated Allen more as a family member than as a resident. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Bendy Tresch and her husband Bob, of Houston, Texas. In addition to his wife, Allen was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Harry. Allen will be missed by those who loved him. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.
