Griffith, in Fairfield on Tuesday, July 18, 1893, Mr. William M. Blackmon, aged about 67. The deceased came to Freestone County about 1851 from Wilcox County Alabama, a county from which many leading families came to Freestone in its early history. The deceased was therefore an old resident of the county and had much to do with the early settlement. Mr. Blackmon was well known to the older citizens of the county. He was a man of great sociability and hospitality, fond of hunting and amusement in his younger days all was welcome at his house and he was glad to entertain his friends. For several years his health had been failing and he forced to live in the quiet retirement necessary to one of his feeble condition. He came to Fairfield about six months ago in very feeble health and gradually his physical powers declined until Tuesday when he quietly passed away. The deceased was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church in which faith he died. He was a brother to the late Dr. B.T. Blackmon of Winkler and of the late Dr. D. L. Blackmon of Corsicana. He was the last survivor of a family of twelve brothers and sisters, a family of prominence in Wilcox County, Alabama before the war. Remains of the deceased were interred in the Fairfield Cemetery Wednesday morning, by the side of his wife who died several years ago, Rev. W. F. Brinson officiating. One by one our old residents are passing away. Peace to his ashes.
