Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Teague Chronicle June 21, 2007 issue WESLEY MARRELL BUTLER Mr. Wesley Marrell Butler of Teague, Texas, passed away on June 12, 2007, at Hillcrest Baptist Hospital in Waco, Texas. He was 69 years old. Mr. Butler was born on June 3, 1938, in Alice, Texas to Louis and Viola Simmons Butler. He attended Brownwood High School in Brownwood, Texas in 1953 to 1955 and graduated from Freer High School, in Freer, Texas in 1957. He attended Southwest Texas State College at San Marcos where there were several academic honoraries: Alpha Chi National Academic Honorary Society (president, 1960-61); President of the English Club, 60-61; Who’s Who American Colleges and Universities in 1959, 60 and 61 and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1961. He achieved his Masters degree and worked on his PhD at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Mr. Butler taught American Government at the University of Colorado from 1962 until 1964 and was Assistant Professor of Government at Texas Tech in Lubbock from 1964 until 1967. He was active in Democratic politics and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1964. Mr. Butler was a member of the Lubbock Council for the United National Mayors Committee for U.N. Observance week, a member of Pi Sigma Alpha American Association of University Professors and a member of the American Political Science Association. He was named one of the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1967. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Mexia. He married Rose Boyd in August of 1976. She owned the True Value Hardware Store in Fairfield and after their marriage Mr. Butler worked in the store for years. He left to care for his wife who had become ill. Mr. and Mrs. Butler traveled the world over, several times. The last trip they took was their 21st cruise. Mr. Butler is survived by his wife Rose Butler of Teague, his stepsons George Drayton Boyd III of Venice, California and John Scott Boyd and wife Melody of Huntsville, Texas, his granddaughter Reeci Boyd Ellington and husband Justin of College Station, Texas, other relatives and special friends in Teague and Fairfield.
