Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Fairfield Recorder - Thursday, March 23, 2006 edition, Page 4B Hazel (Bonner) Camp Hazel Bonner Camp, age 84, died March 14 at Mainland Medical Center in Texas City. Born at Steward's Mill on August 29, 1921 to Mattie and Wirt Knox Bonner, Mrs. Camp came to Galveston after graduating at age 16 from nurse's training at St. Mary's Infirmary, thus following in her big sister Ruth's footsteps. During her training, she met a young sailor named Vernon M. Camp whom she married on May 4, 1940. She continued to live in Galveston for more than 60 years, moving to Texas City five years ago to live with her daughter. Mrs. Camp is remembered as a devoted wife and a loving mother and grandmother. She was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star having served several terms as Worthy Matron and on various appointed state committees. She was also active on the advisory board of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls for several years. Mrs. Camp belonged to the Western Bells, a club for widows of El Mina Shrine and was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church of Galveston. Mrs. Camp enjoyed her long time affiliation with Masonic organizations and especially adored her family. In the past she enjoyed bowling, was an avid tennis and ice-skating fan and a steadfast supporter of the Astros and Rockets. Visitation will be Thursday, March 23 at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston with a funeral service to follow. Graveside services will be at Bonner Cemetery at Steward's Mill near Fairfield this Friday at 4:00 p. m. She is preceded in death by her parents, six siblings and her husband. Survivors include daughter Beverly Ross and husband Kent of Texas City; granddaughters Dana Teaff and husband Tim of Conroe and Katherine Stribling and husband Clay of Amarillo; great grandchildren Kalynn and Ross Teaff and Spencer Stribling as well as several nieces and nephews and many friends.
