Freestone County, Texas Obituaries [Thomas Stanley Carroll b Oct 14, 1843, d Sep 3, 1898, CSA, buried at Driver Cemetery.] Fairfield Recorder - Sep 9, 1898 Death of Mr. T.S. Carroll Our town was greatly surprised to learn last Sunday morning by telephone that Mr. Thomas S. Carroll, living near Butler was dead. But few here had heard that he was sick and his friends were painfully shocked at the intelligence. The deceased had been unwell but a few days. His illness proved to be pneumonia and it carried him off rapidly, his death taking place Saturday night. The deceased was a native of Georgia, but moved before the civil war with father and family to southern Arkansas. After the war they moved to Texas settling in this county in which the deceased had lived for about 30 years. Mr. Carroll went into the war from Arkansas and made his country a brave and faithful soldier; serving the four years through with Lee and Stonewell Jackson in Virginia. As a resident of Freestone county he was one of its best and most esteemed citizens. Pleasantly and friendly in disposition and accomodating to all, a true friend and good neighbor, he was one of those men who go to make up a county's best and most valuable citizenship. Truly can it be said that our county lost one of her best men when he died. Mr. Carroll was about 55 years old. He left a wife and several children to mourn his loss besides many relatives in this county. He was a brother of D.V. Carroll of Fairfield and John G. Carroll of Mexia. ------------------------------------- Fairfield Recorder - Sep 30, 1898 Resolution of Respect To the Master Workman and members of Protection Lodge No. 77 A.O.U.W.
