Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Teague Chronicle - Feb 4, 2010 issue ALICE ERWIN HALLUM CHILDS Funeral services for Alice Erwin Hallum Childs, 97, of Fairfield, Texas, were conducted on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at Capps Memorial Chapel with Evangelist Don Thornton officiating. Interment followed the services at Fairfield Cemetery. Mrs. Childs was born on March 18, 1912, in Athens, Texas, to John and Edna Woodson Hallum. She graduated from North Texas State Teachers College in Denton, Texas, with a teaching certificate. She also graduated from Jefferson Davis Hospital Nursing School in 1930 with a Registered Nurse degree. She was an Ensign in the United States Navy Nurse Corp stationed at the United States Naval Hospital in Long Beach, California. It was there following the attack on Pearl Harbor that she met Chief Petty Officer Tilden Robert Childs who was wounded while serving aboard the U.S.S. Vestal which was tied up to the U.S.S. Arizona during the attack. Alice and Tilden were married on October 29, 1943. In 1952 Alice continued her education and graduated from East Texas State University in Commerce with a BS in Sociology. She worked as a nurse in Houston, Teague, Wortham and Fairfield. She passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2010, in Fairfield, Texas. Mrs. Childs was preceded in death by her husband Tilden in 1992 after 49 years of marriage; her brother John Hallum, and her sisters Elizabeth Workman and Grey Dillard. Survivors include her children Sara Nelson and husband Terry of Corsicana, Tilden Robert Childs, Jr. of Fairfield; her sisters Ruby Miller and Doris Bridge both of Athens; her grandchildren Brandon, Brooke and Blaire Nelson; numerous nieces and nephews.
