Mexia Daily News - May 4, 2004 edition Vi Cockerell TEAGUE - Funeral services for Mrs. Vi Cockerell, 87, will be conducted Thursday morning at 10 o'clock in Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be that afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Groveton Cemetery at Groveton. The Rev. Paul Gauntt, pastor of Eighth Avenue Baptist Church, will officiate. Mrs. Cockerell, born May 11, 1916, in Apple Springs, died Monday in Manor Nursing Home-Mexia. She had resided in this area since 1981, and was a member of Round Prairie Baptist Church, a member of the VFW Post 5872 Ladies Auxiliary in Fairfield, and had managed the North Sheppard Bowling Lanes in Houston for 20 years. Mrs. Cockerell was known as a great gardener, loved growing flowers, canning and putting up food, and cooking for her large family. She loved her grandkids. The family will receive visitors Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock at the funeral home. Mrs. Cockerell was preceded in death by two husbands - W.J. (Dude) Rasbeary and Robert Cockerell; and by a son, William Cullen Rasbeary. Surviving are her children - Ann Sissell of Lake Mexia, Joyce Webb and husband Frank of Luling, Carolyn Conley and husband Leon of Nacogdoches, Ron Rasbeary and wife Jackie of Teague, Donna Northcutt of Fairfield and Debra Robertson of Palestine; eight step-children and their families - Danny, Dale, Donnie and David Cockerell, Diane Griffin, Deborah Ryan, Jerry Willett and Paula Swinburn; 20 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters, Juanell Womack of Lufkin and Evelyn Calloway of Arlington.
