Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Obituaries for Howard C. Cockerell/Cockrell (4 Jan 1873-30 Jan 1908) Fairfield Recorder - Jan. 17, 1908 issue FATAL SHOOTING AFFRAY John Chamblee Instantly Killed - Howard Cockrell Mortally Wounded Wednesday evening, about 1 o'clock, on what is known as "the hog ridge" about 7 miles northeast of Young, John Chamblee, son of I. B. Chamblee, who lives near Fairfield, was instantly killed, and Howard Cockrell was shot through the body, receiving a mortal wound. Cockrell was with Jim Henderson, the Young boys and Linfield Powell, when they met Chamblee and his nephew, Will Bennett. The trouble started over a horn, that Chamblee had and which Cockrell claimed, although this is not thought to have been the main cuase, as bad feelings had existed for a long time. All parties were on horseback, Cockrell and Chamblee were armed with large caliber Winchesters. They were only a few feet from each other and several shots were fired. Will Bennett was arrested, charged with having fired the shot that killed Cockrell. Chamblee was unmarried; Bennett and Cockrell have families. ================================================ Fairfield Recorder - Feb. 7, 1908 issue Card of Thanks We tender our heartfelt thanks to our faithful doctor and kind friends, who so kindly waited on our beloved husband and father during his last illness. GUSSIE COCKRELL AND FAMILY ================================================ [same issue] Fairfield Recorder - Feb. 7, 1908 issue Death of Howard Cockrell Thursday morning, Jan. 30, the death angel came and claimed our beloved brother as his own, after having been confined to his bed about a fortnight. He was born, Jan. 4, 1873; was reared, and lived near Young, all his life, loved and respected by all. He leaves a wife and several children, a father, four brothers, one sister and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his death. He professed religion several years ago and joined the Baptist church. Weep not, dear ones, our loss is his gain. Let's live as our brother and be able to say when the death angel comes to claim us, as our friend said, "I'm going home." He was buried in Rehoboth cemetery, by the W. O. W., Friday afternoon, many friends and relatives attending. A FRIEND
