Death Notice

Vernel Colbert Jr., 35, of Streetman passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, in
Goodlow. Service will be 1 p.m. today at Mount B. Zion Baptist Church in Goodlow
with the Rev. Nathan Carter, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Johnny Moss as 
eulogist. Arrangements by Scott Funeral Home.

2 dead after weekend crash

Two Navarro County men are dead after a violent crash Saturday night. According 
to DPS reports, Vernal Colvert, 35, of Streetman was driving in a while 2001 
Dodge Caravan southbound on FM 309 near Kerens around 8:30 p.m. when he 
approached a curve in the roadway.

His speed was too great to navigate the curve and Colvert apparently drove off
the roadway into a grass area, through a barbed wire fence and into a tree.

Both Colvert and his passenger David Earl Hallman, 43, were killed on impact,
DPS troopers said.

It was unknown whether either man was wearing a safety belt. The vehicle 
exploded into flames upon impact.

Trooper Jeff Taylor served as the lead investigator, with Trooper’s Dane Baker
and Casey Crocker assisting.

Taylor also received assistance from the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department 
and Corsicana and Kerens Fire Departments.

No other vehicles were involved.

DPS is continuing to investigate.
