Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Griffin - Roughton Funeral Home website Monte Cole - Fairfield Monte Cole, resident of Fairfield, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at the age of 73. He was born in Teague on March 12, 1936 to Margaret Young Cole and G. C. Cole. Over the years he has owned over 75 resturants and convenience stores, eight of which are in Freestone County. He served as Mayor of Fairfield for three terms from 1986 - 1992. Currently he served as President of the Fairfield Hospital Board and on the board of the Fairfield Industrial Development Corporation. He was voted Fairfield Citizen of the Year in 1984. Monte also served as President of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, President of the Fairfield Eagle Club, Presdient of the Fairfield Rotary, and was on the board of the Freestone County Appraisal District. He has been a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairfield since 1981 and was instrumental in the design and building of the Christian Life Center. Monte was the Regional Director of the Texas Baptist Mens Group and participated in the Lay Renewal. He has served the community as a public servant since 1982. He was preceded inn eath by his parent Margaret Young Cole and G.C. Cole. Sons Clay Cole and Joshua Cole and a granddaughter Jessica Cole. Monte is survived by his wife of 47 years Janice Simms Cole of Fairfield. Daughter Caren Cole, son Mark Cole and wife Marsha, daughter Tawnya Cole. Grandchildren Cooper and Lauren Cole, Zachary, Zane, Jack, Margaret, and Sutton Graves. Sister Doris Bellah and brother Bill Cole. There are also many wonderful friends. Visitation will be held on Saturday evening in the Chapel at Griffin - Roughton Funeral Home from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, January 17, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Fairfield with Pastor Ken Pruitt officiating. Burial will follow at the Fairfield Cemetery. Pallbeares wil be Billy Dotson, Larry Iviy, Charlie Ritchie, Kevin Benedict, George Robinson, John WIlson, Billy Barlow, and Mark Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be his Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.
