Freestone County, Texas Obituaries Kenneth Ellis "Sonny" Compton   Funeral services for Mr. Kenneth Ellis “Sonny” Compton, 75, were held on Monday, June 17, 2013, at 11:00a.m. at Bowers Funeral Home in Teague. Bro. Scott Matthews officiated. Interment followed the services at Cade Cemetery near Streetman with military honors provided by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be held on Sunday with the family present from 6:00p.m. until 8:00p.m. at the funeral home. Kenneth Ellis “Sonny” Compton passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at his residence in Denton. He was born in Corsicana, on August 23, 1937 to Irby Lee and Mary Hayes Compton of Streetman. He spent his early years in Streetman and graduated from Fairfield High School with the Class of 1955. After graduation, he worked for Swift Co. in Ft. Worth.   He met and married his wife, Suzanne Pounds, in 1967 while stationed at Ft. McPherson, GA. Mr. Compton enlisted in the U.S. Army in Dec 1956 where he served for more than twenty-six years, including two tours of duty in Vietnam.   He retired from the military in 1983 as First Sergeant of the Military Police at Ft. Hood, TX, while also being stationed at many locations previously such as Puerto Rico; Fort Greely, Alaska; St. Augustine, FL.; Raleigh, NC; Romulus, NY; Panama Canal Zone.  He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and Army Commendation Medal, among many others.   After retiring from the Army, Mr. Compton and his family resided in Teague, where he, his wife, and son lived until 2012.   He also retired from the U.S. Post Office after ten years of service as a mail carrier and worked many years with his brother at the Quik Pic. Together he and his wife also owned and operated a Uniform and Resale store. His great loves after retirement were visiting his grandchildren, working in his yard, and participating in serious discussion with the morning coffee guy’s at Daniel’s & Dap’s in Teague.     Mr. Compton’s family and friends know him as caring, hard-working, strong, courageous, and an incredibly generous giver.   He fully supported every dream his family had, including his wife becoming a nurse and moving his family to Denton, TX. to be near his grandchildren. He was fully devoted to his family, his friends, his country, his career, and everything he did in life.  He was also a 32nd degree Mason. Mr. Compton is survived by his wife of over forty-five years, Suzanne Pounds Compton; son Michael Ellis Compton formerly of Teague, now of Denton; daughter and son-in-law Christi and Brandon Tyler of Denton; and son Kenny Compton of Bayamone, Puerto Rico; grandchildren Brady, Nathan and Corban Tyler of Denton; sister and brother-in-law Jimmie and Tommy Casey of Bastrop; brother-in-law Joe Kenneth Tyner of Beaumont; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Ken was preceded in death by his parents Irby and Mary Compton; two brothers, J.E. (Ed) Compton and J.S. Compton; and a sister, Mary Lee Tyner.   Bowers Funeral Home of Teague, Texas conducted funeral arrangements.
