Freestone County, Texas Obits Ricks-Bowers Funeral Home website Raymond "Skipper" Cothran (August 27, 1948 - October 9, 2006) Funeral services for Raymond (Skipper) Cothran of Teague were held on Thursday, October 12, 2006 at 10:00a.m. at 8th Ave. Baptist Church. Bro. Jarrod Pettit and Rev. Orval Barger officiated. Interment followed the services at Greenwood Cemetery in Teague. Serving as pallbearers were, Larry Story, Thomas Earl Bush, Terry Sartor, Donny Cockerham, Merle Thornton, and Scott Holmes. Mr. Leroy Senter was named as an honorary pallbearer. Mr. Cothran passed away on Monday, October 9, 2006 at Parkview Regional Hospital in Mexia. Skipper was born in Teague to Raymond & Eunice George Cothran on Aug. 27, 1948. He moved with his family to Dallas and grew up there, graduating from South Oak Cliff High School in 1966. He married the love of his life that same year, Patricia Barger of Teague and they shared over forty years together. He worked on the loading docks for Sears in Dallas before moving to Teague in 1970 to work for his father-in-law at Barger's Grocery Store. He later went to work for TXU as a heavy equipment operator and retired after twenty-five years. He again went to work in the grocery business in Mexia for HEB in the produce department where he was currently employed. Mr. Cothran raised hogs and cattle and broke many horses (and one mule!) during his lifetime. He was a member of 8th Avenue Baptist Church in Teague for over thirty-six years. He is survived by his wife, Pat Cothran; two daughters, Nannette Posey and Sheila Clary & husband Lynn; and one son, Wade Cothran & wife Lisa, all of Teague; eight grandchildren, Amber, Matthew, Courtney, Emily, Makenzie, Shelby, Morgan, & Cameron; one great-grandson, Luke; one brother, James Cothran & wife Marie and two sisters, Teresa Byrd & husband Bob and Cathy Shaver all of Mesquite; his "Parents by love", W.C. & Zelma Barger of Teague; sister-in-law, Judy Lucas of Palestine; brother-in-law, Glenn Ray Barger of Teague; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, & many friends including his special friend, Walt Stacks of Teague. Skipper worked on the loading docks for Sears in Dallas before moving back to Teague in 1970 to work for his father-in-law at Barger’s Grocery. He later went to work for TXU as a heavy equipment operator for 25 years before retiring. He went back into the grocery business five years ago, working in the produce department for HEB in Mexia and was employed there at the time of his death.
