Freestone County, Texas Obituaries [This is William B. Cotten, Sr. (Aug 6, 1818 - Feb 25, 1888)] Fairfield Recorder - March 2, 1888 edition DIED Died at his residence, about nine miles south of Fairfield, on Saturday February 25th 1888, Mr. William Cotten, aged about 70. The deceased was one of the old citizens of Freestone, and, in point of residence, one of the oldest. He came to Freestone about the year 1850, when the county was a part of Limestone, and before the town of Fairfield was laid out. He settled first at old Pine Bluff, which was then quite a commercial point on the Trinity River. From there he came to Fairfield and for many years was a well known citizen of our town. He was a man of fine business qualifications and often held positions of salesman and book-keeper in different commercial establishments, and was once District Clerk of the county. Mr. Cotten was a pleasant, intelligent gentleman, and his long, residence in the county gave him an extended acquaintance and many friends. He was a kind father and a good neighbor. He had been in failing health many months and his death was not unexpected. His remains were brought to Fairfield for internment, and were laid to rest by the Fairfield Lodge A. F. & A. M. of which the deceased was a member. He leaves to mourn his loss, an aged wife, three daughters and one son. Peace to his ashes.
