Freestone County, Texas Obituaries The Palestine Herald - February 10, 2007 Wesley G. Dawkins Deacon Wesley G. Dawkins was the seventh child born to Wesley Dawkins Sr. and Maggie Wilson Dawkins in Leon County on March 24, 1939. He went to be with the Lord on Tuesday among loving family and devoted friends in the Hospice of East Texas in Tyler. Wesley grew up in Buffalo and graduated from the G.B. Bennett High School with Class of 1957. He participated in all sports in high school and excelled in basketball. Wesley was baptized in the First St. Holland Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. M.B. Burnett. He married Dorothy Helen Caldwell in 1961 in Buffalo. They had two children, Audrey Nell and Wesley Jr. Wesley married Janice Cunningham in 1981 in Freestone County. Mr. Dawkins served as a volunteer firefighter for the Buffalo Fire Department for a number of years. He was ordained a deacon in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. Walter Johnson Sr., and served as chairman of the board and treasurer. Mr. Dawkins was a member of the Brotherhood, the Buffalo Male Chorus, and served as acting superintendent of the Sunday School. Mr. Dawkins’ hobbies included fishing, raising hogs and cows, and all sports. He will be most remembered for his sense of humor, his laughter, and for telling others “how good God is.” Mr. Dawkins was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Wesley Jr.; his sisters, Myrtle Smith, Katherine Dawkins and an infant; his brothers, Luther Dawkins and Theo Dawkins Sr. Those who will cherish his memory most are, his wife, Janice M. Dawkins of Oakwood; daughter, Audrey Nell Amos of Buffalo; son, Stanley Cunningham and wife Tanya of Waxahachie; brothers, Eddie Dawkins of Buffalo, Royce Dawkins and wife Carolyn of Buffalo, Joe Dawkins and wife Doris of Buffalo, Elmer Dawkins and wife Betty of Houston, John Dawkins and wife Vera of Houston; sister, Lillie West of Buffalo; grandchildre, Byron Dawkins of Waco, Tiffaney Dettmer of Tyler and Trey Amos of Buffalo; mother-in-law, Annie Cunningham of Oakwood; sisters-in-law, Lois Jefferson and husband Bobby of Dallas, Jean McGaughey and husband Michael of Dallas; brother-in-law, Floyd Cunningham and wife Sue of Fairfield; and nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today in the C.L. Boulden Family Life Center, 303 East Railroad St. in Buffalo with the Revs. Joseph Brown and Walter Johnson Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the Sand Hill Cemetery in Buffalo. Pallbeares will be Royce Dawkins Jr., Floyd Cunningham Jr., Roderick Dawkins, Daniel Woodson, Darrin Dawkins, Joey Dawkins and Deitrick Dawkins Moore’s Angelic Funeral Home in Teague is in charge of arrangements.
